6-20 Krabi Day 2

After picking Mike up from Krabi's airport, we got on some mopeds and headed to Ao Nang Beach, which is a commercial and tourist center with bars, restaurants, hotels, and a big beach. We stopped at a roadside street food vendor for a snack before hitting the beach. There wasn't much to choose from and it all had been sitting out for a while. I settled on some fish ball skewers. Mike got a papaya salad as his first Thai meal. Matt and Chris got a whole fried fish and it was even reheated for them. After 5min of the 4 of us picking away at the fish, Mike pulled the head apart. None of us could believe our eyes as a small slimy slug popped out of the head, squirming around on the plate! Our jaws dropped. Some gasped, some laughed, some turned pale faced. I stole the last scraps of fish while they paused. Those pansies acted like they never had a slug crawl out of their lunch before. We all looked at each other, wondering what was in store for our poor pharang (foreigner) stomachs that evening. Suddenly we weren't so hungry anymore so we got back on the road and searched for a place to re inflate Matt's front tire. The streets here are dangerous enough without having to worry about your tire falling off! After another pit stop for some cold Changs, we sat under a shady palm tree on the first of many beaches in our near future. Ao Nang beach is like no other beach I've seen. Huge limestone island towers shoot up out of the sea. Some are vertical walls up 200' around the entire circumference, where others are sloped mounds that can be accessed with a good set of shoes from the water. They are covered in vegetation and innaccessible in most all areas due to overhangs formed by wave action. The water today is calm, emerald green, and not very clear but at least it's 85 degrees! The beach is very shallow. We walked 100' out and were only chest high. We headed back to the resort and made an attempt to return that afternoon, all of us piled into a motorbike with sidecar that holds 4 people. It was really hard to drive and Chris drove us off the road into the bushes at one point because we all had leaned back, causing the front tire to lift off the ground. We decided to stop screwing around and poor Chris never did get paid for the ride. We were pretty tired that night so skipped the pool and laid low. We were going to try some excursions the next day, so we decided to get some rest.
