DOI SUTHEP TEMPLE
Perched high on a hilltop above the city is Doi Suthep, the premier temple in Chiang Mai. A 20min ride on a songtau (a pickup with bench seats in the back camper shell) got us to the entrance. It's very beautiful, and so are the views of the city 3,500ft below. The central golden shrine is like the dozen or so we've walked by in town and they're a marvel to look at. It's wrapped in gold leaf, as are the majority of the interiors of side rooms around the perimeter. The decoration in these side rooms are very ornate, laden with gold leaf, and I hate to say it, but gaudy. Offerings of incense, flowers, candles, etc. It's a good excuse to get off your feet by sitting down and taking it all in.
